Archetype XXI · Great Way · The Spirit

Contact with intelligent infinity itself — the unspeakable joy at the end of the spirit's long road.

The contact with intelligent infinity is most likely to produce an unspeakable joy in the entity experiencing such contact.

Ra confirms the questioner's guess in a single line, adds one reflection, and then closes the working — Archetype Twenty-One gets less direct attention than almost any other station in the cycle.

The concept

The spirit cycle closes the tarot's third seven, cards fifteen through twenty-one, built on the foundation the mind and body cycles already laid (). Asked directly whether the twenty-first archetype represents contact with intelligent infinity, Ra confirms it — then adds a reflection the questioner hadn't proposed: this same contact may also be seen as contact with intelligent energy, the Universe, which the querent's own tarot names, "somewhat provincially," the World (). Two contacts, then, folded into one card — infinite and universal — with the World's imagery standing for the more provincial of the two.

Ra had already set up the ground for this in the archetype before it. The material world, transformed by spirit into what is infinite and eternal, is only the beginning; the infinity of the spirit is a greater realization than the infinity of consciousness, because a consciousness disciplined by will and faith is what can contact intelligent infinity directly (). Asked for an example of what either contact produces, Ra offers little more than a gesture at each: intelligent energy is the energy of the Logos, healing, building, removing, destroying, and transforming all other-selves as well as the self, while contact with intelligent infinity is most likely to produce a joy Ra can only call unspeakable in the one who receives it () — then closes the working before the questioner can press further, inviting the fuller question into another session that this one doesn't reach.

That thinness matters for how to read the card. Ra's general correction to the Great Way, stated for mind, body, and spirit alike, applies here without qualification: this station is not the culmination reached after a cycle's seven activities finish their work, but the environment within which mind, body, or spirit already operates () — the space the veiling process itself draws, already carrying the whole cycle within the limitless current of time/space ().

Working with the archetype

Little is offered here beyond the naming itself, so Ra's standing method carries the weight: take the concept complex on its own before pairing it, note the polarity each station carries, and reserve clothing one's self within it for the adept long practiced in the system (). The World is not a destination the spirit cycle arrives at — it is already the field the other six stations of spirit move within.

In Ra's words

The questioner's guess confirmed, with the reflection Ra adds unasked:

This is correct, although one may also see the reflection of this contact (as well) as the contact with intelligent energy, which is the Universe, or, as you have called it somewhat provincially, the World.

What contact with intelligent energy does — the energy of the Logos, healing, building, removing, destroying, and transforming self and other-selves alike:

We have discussed the possibilities of contact with intelligent energy, for this energy is the energy of the Logos, and thus it is the energy which heals, builds, removes, destroys, and transforms all other-selves as well as the self.

The Great Way restated for mind, body, or spirit alike — not culmination, but environment:

Firstly, we ask that the student consider the Great Way not as the culmination of a series of seven activities or functions but as a far more clearly delineated image of the environment within which the mind, body, or spirit shall function.

  • Then by this contact also with intelligent energy can you give me an example of what this would be for both: for the contact with intelligent infinity and intelligent energy? Could you give me an example of what type of experience this would result in, if that’s at all possible?

  • Then I would guess that the twenty-first archetype would represent the contact with intelligent infinity. Is that correct?

  • Sorry about that. Can you tell me what the twentieth archetype would be?
