Asked about it directly, Ra sets aside the card's familiar name, Hope, and asks for a different word: Faith.

The concept

The spirit cycle runs the tarot's last seven cards, fifteen through twenty-one (77.12). The Catalyst sits third in it, after the Matrix of the Spirit (the Devil) and the Potentiator of the Spirit (the Tower). Asked to confirm that an adept's growing disassociation from other-selves amounts to an excursion into the Matrix of the Spirit, Ra redirects the connection: that excursion is linked instead to the archetype the questioner had called Hope — which Ra would prefer to call Faith (80.13). It is this archetype, Ra says, that begins to reshape the adept's viewpoint, doing so because of what the Potentiator of the Spirit has already illuminated (80.13). Disassociation itself, in the exchange just before, is named a necessary part of the adept's path, whether it turns out to be true separation from other-selves or only separation from the illusory husks that had obscured self and other-self as one (80.11-80.12).

Faith proves hard to use well. Ra says the progress of many adepts working with this archetype becomes a confused path, with few grasping what Ra calls the light of the sun and most left groping in moonlight — light that can deceive as readily as it can uncover (80.10). That difficulty is why the melody of the Matrix of the Spirit so often reads as negative: the freedom an awakening adept gains from the bonds of other-selves' thoughts and opinions looks like evil to those not yet free, whatever polarity the adept is working toward (80.10).

Spiritual catalyst is also its own thread, not mental catalyst under another name. Whatever event a mind/body/spirit complex meets, each complex processes it separately — catalyst taken up by the spirit becomes catalyst for the spirit alone, worked into an experience unique to that complex's own bias (93.12).

Working with the archetype

Ra's general instruction for the whole system applies here without addition: study each concept complex on its own, then paired with its partner, attending to the polarity each carries (89.19). Beyond that, Ra offers no separate discipline for meeting spiritual catalyst as Faith — only the naming, and the warning that most who attempt it find moonlight before sun.

The progress chosen by many adepts becomes a confused path as each adept attempts to use the Catalyst of the Spirit. Few there are which are successful in grasping the light of the sun. By far, the majority of adepts remain groping in the moonlight and, as we have said, this light can deceive as well as uncover hidden mystery.

Catalyst being processed by the body is catalyst for the body. Catalyst being processed by the mind is catalyst for the mind. Catalyst being processed by the spirit is catalyst for the spirit. An individual mind/body/spirit complex may use any catalyst which comes before its notice—be it through the body and its senses, or through mentation, or through any other more highly developed source—and use this catalyst in its unique way to form an experience unique to it, with its biases.
