# Instrument *Canonical page: https://ra.contact/concepts/instrument* *Last updated: 2026-06-25* *Ra's term for the channel through whom contact is made — here Carla Rueckert, whose body is used while she is in trance.* ## What Ra means The instrument is not simply a medium but a living system whose condition determines what the contact can and cannot do. Ra describes the contact as narrow-band and the instrument as highly sensitive, and is plain that the trance condition is not without toll upon her (61.12). Every session in the corpus opens with Ra scanning the instrument and reporting on her condition — a practice that itself reveals how seriously Ra treats her welfare as part of the work. The instrument's protection depends on the balance of the whole group around her. Ra's most detailed account of danger describes a moment when the instrument, while channeling another Confederation source, inwardly wished she were channeling Ra instead — a momentary shift of intent that opened an opportunity for an Orion entity to attempt to draw her out of her physical vehicle (68.5). Only the fifth-density status of that other source, and the support sent by those present, prevented harm. The instrument returned to integration, but the episode established how narrow the margin can be. Will and discipline sustain what physical vitality alone cannot. Ra counsels that while the faculty of will is most central and most valued, driving the body by will alone without attending to its limits risks serious distortion — and that accepting help from the support group is itself a form of service (44.1). A working of negative origin targeting the instrument's throat showed the reverse: that even an indirect interference, aggravated by persistent allergies, could threaten the viability of the contact itself (98.5). ## In Ra's words The narrow-band nature of the contact and the cost it carries: > This contact is narrow-band.
