# IV. The Experience of the Mind

Not reaching but grasping — what the mind does, firmly, with the catalyst it is given.

Tarot name: The Emperor. Cycle: mind. Station: Experience.

The seated figure rests on the square of material illusion, darker here than in the Catalyst card, with both polarities present and separated only by the sifting of cumulative experience (94.16). One foot is precariously placed, riven from secure footing by the nature of experience yet still carefully set in the foundation of the whole concept — an image of fragility and structural surety at once (94.18). The figure's attention is caught by catalyst on the left, while the power and magic wait, harder to reach, on the right-hand path (94.20). A great cat guards the figure, but only in proportion to the purity of intention and inner work already done along that right-hand path (95.23).

## The concept

Ra names Archetype Four the Experience of the Mind, agreeing that the tarot's Emperor is an apt image for it: the name implies nobility, and the nobility in question belongs to the conscious mind once it is worked on by the unconscious (78.37). The mechanism is specific — catalyst does not become experience on its own. Only catalyst that has been processed by the potentiated consciousness, the deep unconscious reached by Archetype Two, produces experience, and it is this processing that ennobles the conscious mind with the unconscious mind's resources (78.37). Ra qualifies the pipeline further: catalyst does yield experience, but through free will and the faculty of imperfect memory it is most often only partially used, so the experience that results is correspondingly skewed (92.14). Offered a tidier formulation — Catalyst of the Mind acts on the conscious mind, Experience of the Mind is what accumulates in the unconscious as continuing bias — Ra allows that the relationships are correctly perceived, though the statement is too rigid; there is a great deal of dynamic interrelationship among the first four archetypes (79.35).

That interrelationship compounds over time. As an entity gains experience, it increasingly favors positive interpretations of catalyst along the service-to-others path and negative interpretations along the service-to-self path (94.12). After the veiling, each new encounter with catalyst is met according to the bias already accumulated — a function, Ra says, of Card Four itself — which tends to produce further catalyst along whichever path is already chosen (95.20). Experience is, in this sense, self-reinforcing: it does not simply record a bias, it deepens it.

## The image

The seated male figure rests on the square of material illusion, darker here than in Card Three, guarded by a great cat; Ra confirms that the two polarities are genuinely present in the image, with no separation between them except the sifting produced by cumulative experience (94.16). One foot is precariously placed, riven from secure footing by the nature of experience, yet still carefully and architecturally set in the foundation of the whole concept complex — an image Ra calls a key not only to this archetype but to others, expressing at once the fragility and the surety of structure (94.18). Card Four's imagery is confirmed to carry a sharper definition between dark and light than Card Three, marking the separation catalytic action produces (94.23).

The figure's attention is caught by what Ra calls the left-hand catalyst, while the power, the magic, waits on the right-hand path; the difficulty named here is fashioning catalyst into a magical, positive experience, since a comparable "magic" on the negative side is far slower to appear in third density (94.20). The skirt's asymmetry, longer to the left and shorter to the right, is confirmed to mark a greater separation from other-selves along the left-hand path than the right (95.21), and the guarding cat is confirmed to protect in direct proportion to the purity of intention and inner work behind the right-hand path (95.23). The figure's crossed legs form a cross like the crux ansata, signifying the manifest nature of mind, body, and spirit: no experience is purchased without effort, and no act of service to self or to others comes without a price to the entity performing it, commensurate with its purity (94.26).

## Working with the archetype

The practical stakes of this loop are stated plainly. An entity that has purely chosen the service-to-others path gains no outward shelter from catalyst — no protection from what Ra calls the gusts, flurries, and blizzards of quick and cruel catalyst — but for the pure, everything encountered comes already interpretable as love and light (95.24). No such protection exists on the other side: where Experience has turned negative, random catalyst affects the entity purely as a matter of statistics (95.26). What Experience of the Mind offers, then, is not control over what catalyst arrives but authority over how firmly it is taken up once given — grasped, not reached for — and how completely the grasp is used rather than left to imperfect memory and half-attention (92.14).

Naming the fourth archetype, and the mechanism that ennobles the conscious mind:

> The broad name for Archetype Four may be the Experience of the Mind. In the tarot you find the name of Emperor. Again this implies nobility, and in this case we may see the suggestion that it is only through the catalyst which has been processed by the potentiated consciousness that experience may ensue. Thusly is the conscious mind ennobled by the use of the vast resources of the unconscious mind.

> The figure is expressing the nature of experience by having its attention caught by what may be termed the left-hand catalyst. Meanwhile, the power, the magic, is available upon the right-hand path.

> The nature of experience is such that the attention shall be constantly given varieties of experience. Those that are presumed to be negative, or interpreted as negative, may seem in abundance. It is a great challenge to take catalyst and devise the magical, positive experience. That which is magical in the negative experience is much longer coming, shall we say, in the third density.

The crossed legs, and the cost every experience carries:

> The cross formed by the living limbs of the image signifies that which is the nature of mind/body/spirit complexes in manifestation within your illusion. There is no experience which is not purchased by effort of some kind—no act of service to self or others which does not bear a price to the entity manifesting, commensurate with its purity.

> All things in manifestation may be seen in one way or another to be offering themselves in order that transformations may take place upon the level appropriate to the action.

What purity on the service-to-others path does, and does not, protect against:

> The seeker which has purely chosen the service-to-others path shall certainly not have a variant apparent incarnational experience. There is no outward shelter in your illusion from the gusts, flurries, and blizzards of quick and cruel catalyst.

> However, to the pure, all that is encountered speaks of the love and the light of the One Infinite Creator. The cruelest blow is seen with an ambiance of challenges offered and opportunities to come. Thusly, the great pitch of light is held high above such an one so that all interpretation may be seen to be protected by light.
